Dear Friends,
Last week we said, "an indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to
sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian, who is duly disposed,
gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church. Who is 'duly
disposed' and what are the "conditions"? To acquire a plenary indulgence--a total remission of
temporal punishment--it is necessary to perform the work to which the indulgence is attached
and to fulfill three conditions:
1. Sacramental confession
2. Eucharistic Communion
3. Prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father
(It is further required that all attachment to sin, even venial sin, be absent. A single sacramental
confession suffices for gaining several plenary indulgences, but Communion must be received
and prayers for the Holy Father's intentions must be recited for the gaining of each plenary
indulgence. The condition of praying for the Holy Father's intentions is fully satisfied by reciting
one Our Father and one Hail Mary...[unless otherwise provided.] A confession within seven
days of the indulgence satisfies this norm. If this disposition is in any way less that complete, or
if the prescribed three conditions are not fulfilled, the indulgence will only be partial, except for
those who are "impeded.")
Unfortunately, we all sin too often and we may have committed a venial sin since our last
confession. Therefore, it is wise to say an act of contrition or perfect contrition at the time we
want to obtain the plenary indulgence. A plenary indulgence can be acquired only once a day,
except for those who are on the point of death. A partial indulgence can be acquired more than
once a day, unless there is an explicit indication to the contrary.
Second Week's Indulgence Suggestion: The Rosary
A plenary indulgence is granted, if the Rosary is recited in church or public oratory or in a
family group, a religious community or pious association; a partial indulgence is granted in other
circumstances. Either the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, or Mysteries of Light may be used. The
five decades must be recited continuously with pious meditation on the mysteries. The vocal
recitation must be accompanied by pious meditation on the mysteries. In public recitation, the
mysteries must be announced.
Don't be afraid of indulgences. They are great gifts of God's love from the lavish and limitless
spiritual treasury of the Church. Because they have been misunderstood and abused in the past is
no reason to ignore them in the present and forfeit their benefits for our loved one and for
ourselves.
